UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES
Support and Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Abuse May Fall Into One or More of the Following Areas.
DWI Assessments
A DWI Assessment is an individual meeting with a qualified counselor to gather information about your alcohol and drug history. By law, anyone convicted of driving while impaired (DWI) in North Carolina must get a substance abuse assessment. A substance abuse assessment is not the same as substance abuse or drug testing. During the assessment, the counselor will simply ask questions. After the assessment, the counselor will recommend a level of DWI education or treatment.
GET DWI HELP »Substance Abuse (non-DWI) Assessments
Similar to a DWI assessment, a substance abuse assessment involves a series of questions that a qualified counselor will ask you regarding your use of alcohol or drugs. The difference between the DWI assessment and the substance abuse assessment is that the DWI assessment is only required when a person is arrested for driving while impaired. Typically a judge will issue a court order for a substance abuse assessment if you are arrested for possession or the illegal use of drugs in a non-DWI related case.

Drug screening provides immediate preliminary urinalysis results on an individual’s use of 12 commonly abused drugs. Clients and referring sources are provided with a results document once the interpretation is completed.
Alcohol Drug Education Training School (ADETS)
ADETS is a DWI class (16 hours) that is recommended for drivers convicted of a DWI who meet certain conditions.

Drug and alcohol concerns are discussed between our clients and counselor in a comfortable, informal, and nonjudgmental setting. Participants are able to share their personal experiences with alcohol and drugs, if they choose. Open discussions often bring peace of mind to our clients because they are not alone in their experiences.
Short-Term Substance Abuse Counseling (20 Hours)
Short-term outpatient treatment is a 20-39-hour program completed over the course of 30 days. This level of treatment is recommended when the assessment reveals more treatment is needed beyond the scope of ADETS.
Longer-Term Substance Abuse Treatment (40 Hours)
Long-term treatment is a minimum of 40 hours completed over a minimum of 60 days. Long-term substance abuse treatment is suggested when the client is diagnosed with a substance dependence that goes beyond occasional abuse.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment (90 Hours)
A day program requires at least 90 hours of treatment over the course of 90 days. This level of treatment is recommended when the assessment confirms a diagnosis of substance dependence, with or without physiological dependence. This longer-term program provides additional continuing care, urging voluntary participation of the client and significant others.
